After completing our connection through Amsterdam’s Schipol airport, we arrived at Le Regina, our first destination on this particular trip to Europe. How wonderful to arrive at this palatial property after two full days of air travel. Naturally, our first concern was securing a bite to eat. As our arrival time was past midnight, well past what I assumed was the kitchen’s closing time, we tried to suppress our expectations and then asked the reception if it was possible to have a bit of fruit and bread. This, I was told with great expression, would be impossible; they would reopen the kitchen and prepare a proper snack! We were all jubilant, and within a few minutes, we were served salad, soup, fresh bread, butter and cheese, with huge sandwiches, that after two days deprived of decent cuisine, couldn’t have tasted better. This is just an example of the service you can expect at Le Regina.

Le Regina is an elegant and sophisticated hotel, built on three levels of a historic building in Warsaw's Old Town, which was faithfully restored to the style of an eighteenth century palace and equipped with all the modern amenities. The hotel surrounds a lush courtyard garden, somewhat reminiscent of a peaceful monastery. The comfortable lobby and lounge welcomes visitors with a cozy fireplace. Hotel Le Regina is situated in the New Town; a part of Warsaw's historical Old Town district. It happens to be the first, and only, hotel in this prestigious part of the city. There are numerous landmarks of historic importance in close proximity to the hotel, including The Royal Castle, The National Opera House, the Old Town Square and the Umschlagplatz. Very close to the hotel is a lovely park located on a scenic hill, overlooking the Vistula River; Jacob ran each day through the park trails, Isaac ultimately trained and raced slalom kayak on the Vistula River in the Mayors Cup Race of Krakow. The hotel Spa Fitness room offers something for everyone: the indoor infinity pool, made with travertine marble, is beautiful, warm, clean and inviting; the gym, while modest in size, offers free weights for light lifting; the sauna served as a respite after a day of touring Warsaw on bicycles.

The rooms of this five-star property are what should be expected: nothing short of phenomenal. They are beautifully laid out and spacious, with comfortable beds, fine linens, and tasteful, decorative touches and soft lighting. Most noteworthy, are Le Regina’s four deluxe rooms discreetly located on the roof-top, with hardwood floors offering spacious terraces ideal for dining and relaxation, and two ground floor deluxe rooms which have their own private gardens. The well appointed suites, The Presidential and Le Regina, and the roof Penthouse are sure to appeal to business and leisure travelers alike. As luxurious as the rooms were, while in the hotel, we spent a great deal of time in the lounge, which is one of the most inviting and well suited to both business and relaxation as we have experienced.

Le Regina was originally a Palace, and like so many other Polish architectural monuments, it was taken over by the Nazis for officers during World War II. It was then destroyed and between1953-1962 it became the address of the first American Embassy in Warsaw. The structure was utilized as an office building until 2002, when it was closed for a two year renovation transforming it into the luxury hotel it is today.

Jacob ascertained upon initial impression that the dinning room and reception area must have been horse stalls at one point, based on their structural designs. The building’s original structure provides an ideal layout for a hotel. The large courtyard in the center of the building is wonderful for taking a morning coffee, afternoon prosecco, or evening cocktail. Weather permitting; meals are also served in this courtyard. Such courtyards were designed into palaces because during the winter, the heat from the sun warms the undisturbed wind, and during the summer the high walls provide shade.

I have already raved about our excitement at being served dinner at one in the morning, but to mention not another dish besides salad and sandwiches (as delightful as they were) would be an injustice to Le Regina’s restaurant, La Rotisserie. When you enter La Rotisserie, you will find yourself in an exceptional gallery of savory flavors and aromas. Their chef takes the freshest ingredients and blends them into perfect compositions by means of his culinary expertise, art of serving and elegance typical of classic French cuisine. The cuisine is French, the preparation is meticulous, and the flavors are impressive. The menu is highly well rounded, including a grand wine list, alcohols and liqueurs and a top selection of coffees, teas and cigars. The incredible palette of delectable dishes and desserts will appeal to the most sophisticated and discerning of gourmets. We enjoyed wonderfully prepared meats, and especially savored the artistic antipasti. Most memorable dish; smoked and grilled prime of sturgeon with green asparagus

and potato salad, warm vinaigrette of Pommery mustard with chervil. You will not leave Le Regina and La Rotisserie disappointed.
